Paper basis sizes
GSM is based on one square meter of paper. The U.S. lb/ream system is based on 500 sheets in a category-specific basis size. Bond/Writing, Text/Book/Offset and Cover use different basis sizes, so the same GSM can produce different lb values.

Is GSM the same as lb?
No. GSM measures grams per square meter. lb/ream measures the weight of 500 sheets at a category-specific basis size.
Why are Bond, Text and Cover values different?
Each category uses a different basis size: Bond/Writing uses 17 × 22 in, Text/Book/Offset uses 25 × 38 in, and Cover uses 20 × 26 in.
Can I use this for exact purchasing specs?
